(The photo above has absolutely nothing to do with the questions or answers below and probably should have been saved for Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge. But go visit Cee’s Share Your World for more sharing from other bloggers.)

What is the most incredible natural venue that you’ve ever seen in person? I want to say my wife but I think people are getting tired of that rote answer for almost every question. So it would have to be the Grand Canyon, when I first saw it I was around 24 years old. I had seen it in photos but really, you have to experience it in person. We happened to be there when no one else was around and came up to the edge of the cliff to look out over that expanse and I was just speechless. Awestruck. I have seen it about 4 more times since but it is impossible to recapture the feeling of that first time.

How many siblings do you have? I had a sister, but she died from lung cancer. She took up smoking at a very young age and, when she was eventually diagnosed, finally gave up smoking. Too little too late. She died 6 months later.

What’s your birth order? Well, if I had known I could order something, it would have been breast milk. But I was not breast fed as a baby and I think that’s where all my problems stem from. My mother did try to make it up to me afterwards by allowing me to order anything I wanted whenever we went out to eat, but at home it was whatever she was serving that night. And my mother was never the best of cooks.

If you were a shoe, what kind would you be and why? Now what kind of a question is this? Why would I want someone’s smelly feet inside of me? Gross. OK, wait. Is this supposed to be some kind of simile or metaphor or something? Let me think. The shoe would have to be comfortable, elegant, understated, dependable, in a basic color tone, though it could be trimmed in something a bit more flamboyant. Either that, or the Jordan 23 Breakout shoe!

What is the strangest/weirdest thing you have ever eaten? Alligator. Well, it was either me or him. And truth be told, alligator DOES taste like chicken. Like tender white meat.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? Grateful? I hate this question. I always feel like I have to come up with something earth-shattering or interesting. But honestly, I am simply grateful to wake up each morning and face another day. Looking forward to? Getting it right.

In Retrospect:

OK, just because I live in a desert, don’t think I don’t know cold. This shot was taken in Utah in 2013 on a cold January morning when the outside temperature was only 7 degrees. I was wearing a tee shirt. And a flannel shirt. Maybe I had on a sweater, too, I’m not sure. Oh, and a down jacket. A wool knit cap. And probably gloves.

Man, it was cold!

So, to all those 5 people who are following this blog, I must admit that it was ill advised. Not that anybody actually advised me or that I would have listened if they did. But there was no real reason to start a second blog except for maybe ego or something. I do want to continue posting older photos from my archives, but I have decided to do so every Saturday on my original blog, Photos By Emilio. This will be the last and final post on this site. No tears, no recriminations.

It wasn’t you, it was me.

The theme, or photo prompt, for week 24 from The Girl That Dreams Awake is light. Any light but sunlight.

The photo above was lit by the headlights of our car as Lynn stationed herself in the middle of Route 66, blocking traffic both ways.

Good thing there was no traffic.

Thanks to M for the prompt. Now go visit her site to link to other light photos!

One of my favorite places in the southwest is Sedona. Good hiking in beautiful surroundings. And some great restaurants. But the town is a bit too artsy and expensive for my taste. Still I have enjoyed several good meals there and for window shopping, Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village (pictured above) can’t be beat.

My mother died in 2001. My dad, 14 years later. He had always wanted to take my mother’s ashes back to Coney Island, where they had met when they were both teenagers. Just before Christmas of 2015, my wife and I traveled to New York to carry out his wishes.

We commingled their ashes and, on December 12, 2015, scattered them over the beach at Coney Island.

Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed? When I was a kid, I slept with the closet doors open so I could see there was no one there. When I finally realized that I was having nightmares of my clothes coming to life and threatening me, the doors were closed and remain so to this day.

Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel? That’s what they’re there for, no? My mother used to always take ashtrays from hotel rooms when you could smoke in them. I guess that’s where I got it from. But then maybe it’s genetic. My sister used to take steak knives from restaurants because she didn’t have any. But she stopped when she got a full set. One time we were out for Mexican food and I commented on the Cholula hot sauce. She put it into her purse and gave it to me afterwards.

What is your usual bedtime? I’m trying to go to bed earlier so I can get up earlier. So far the earliest has been 9 pm so that I could get up and get out to take photos of the sunrise. But I slept through the entire morning.

Do you like to use post-it notes? No! I used to, but then forgot where I posted the note. Now all notes are on my phone. And then I forget where I put my phone.

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper? I honestly don’t remember. But then I’ve never really written a letter by computer, either. Little messages sent by email and now text. They’ve stopped teaching cursive in schools, I understand. Probably because of me .

Any phobias? Dozens. Insects bigger than my finger, clowns, doctors donning latex gloves, doctors dressed as clowns donning latex gloves….

How tall are you? At my prime I was exactly 6 feet tall. But it’s all been downhill since and now I’m only about 4′ 2″. Did you ever see The Incredible Shrinking Man? That, I fear, will be my fate.

What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? This is always a difficult question, to single out one moment from the past week. but I can certainly tell you what I am looking forward to in the week coming up. January 20, when Trump is finally sworn in as president and we stop looking towards the future with anxiety and fear. The future is now, folks. Anxiety and fear have been my constant companions since he won the election. Remember what I said above that I am afraid of clowns? I rest my case.

This is how we celebrate the New Year around the Pasquale household. In fact, this is how we celebrate almost every free day around the Pasquale household; getting out of the household and taking pictures. This was one of the first photos I took in the new year, maybe because the night before, New Year’s Eve, we both fell asleep in front of the TV watching the 1963 movie Cleopatra.

Ahh, married life!

So, please go check out The Girl That Dreams Awake for more trees. A forest of trees for this week!

A plethora of trees!

I have no information on this art installation in downtown Las Vegas, except that it is supposedly open to the public once a year. This night it was blocked off and I had to shoot over a chain link fence.

My Wife, Lynn

Gallery

My wife hates to have her picture taken. No photo ever looks like what she believes she looks like. I have that same problem. I always think I look better than my photo. The only picture that ever did me justice was taken for my high school senior yearbook when I was a graduating. But this post is not about me. It’s about my wife. So, since I can’t show you a photo of her, imagine my surprise when I came across some street art- some might call it graffiti- of a woman who looks just like my wife.

fremont-7-of-30

OK, maybe Lynn’s hair is longer, and actually brown instead of black. And her lips are a little wider, maybe. The nose is not quite right, either. And her eyes are brown, not blue. Maybe the face is a little narrower, too.

But otherwise, the spitting image.

On a side note, this guy is so talented. I was just amazed when I saw this. How do these guys- and gals- do this? And when? Late at night when no one’s around? But this is Las Vegas. Someone’s always around.

Just wow!
