Cardinal Guzman’s Changing Seasons – October 2016

October 29, 2016

Each month I take one photo at Calico Basin for Cardinal Guzman’s Changing Seasons. This month I was hoping to get something more in the mood of the season. You know. Halloween. Maybe some decorated homes at twilight or kids in costumes walking along the dirt roads. But guess what? No kids, no decorations. No haunted houses. I did find this new home under construction, though. Looks a bit small but I think they intend to build up, rather than out. Anyway, this shot was taken just after sunrise this past Saturday.

Nothing like waiting till the last moment.

Well, we’re in the home stretch. I’m not going to post Cardinal Guzman’s full explanation of the rules because it’s redundant if you’ve been following along. If you haven’t and you want to, I don’t think anyone would mind even though there are only two months left. The idea was to show the changing seasons in your area of the world over each month. Here is a slide show of the past 10 months in Las Vegas, NV. More specifically, Calico Basin.

My best birth control now is just to leave the lights on!

So, this is the final post in my trilogy of daily quotations made possible by the invitation extended to me by Marilyn of Serendipity. Please see my previous post, and the one before that if you missed them.

“If God did not intend for us to eat animals, then why did he make them out of meat?”

~John Cleese~

Now, even though I am a pescatarian (a vegetarian who eats fish) I can still find a lot of truth- and humor- in the quote above. But after being so close to these animals, and even feeding them from our hands, it would be like inviting your friend over for dinner and serving them as the main course.

Anyway, this post is part of the invitation that Marilyn of Serendipity extended to me. Please see my previous post if you missed it.

Oh, and before I forget, it’s been a rough week but brightened a bit by:

1,000 Follows!

Thank you, everyone.

And the rules- which I have partially ignored:

Prompts and Challenges

I used to have this online friend named Marilyn. Married to Garry. They live somewhere in Maine, I believe. A small town somewhere back east. I’m doing this from memory and am too lazy to look up the actual state. But I do remember they live in the United States, not impossible for me to one day show up unexpectedly on their front porch to exact my revenge for inviting me to join in this quote challenge. Which I accepted only because I’m nice like that. There are rules to this challenge- which I am wont to ignore. You can read them at the bottom of this page if you have any interest. Marilyn’s site is called Serendipity, to which Garry sometimes contributes.

Most quotes posted on the internet are accompanied by an uplifting photo. But that would take too much effort for me today. So no photos, just quotes which I seem to have collected over the years! And please don’t feel like you must comment. I did not take much time thinking about these. These are just a few that happen to inspire me. Such as:

“I believe that if life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade… And try to find somebody whose life has given them vodka, and have a party.”

What are you really glad you did yesterday? In a word? Survived. Lynn had this crazy idea that she wanted us to hike Angel’s Landing in Zion and I stupidly, said sure. Imagine being 1,400 feet up the side of a cliff holding on to a chain link rope with nothing but a sheer drop below you? I quit halfway up convinced I’d rather live. Not Lynn. She continued on, made it to the top and back, and then freaked out on the way home, shaking and not able to get warm. She is OK today but we are both sore in places we didn’t even know existed.

Would you prefer a one floor house or multiple levels? Multiple levels with an elevator. Actually, Lynn would love to have one of those tiny houses but insists we need two bathrooms. I told her I could just go out back!

Have you done something you truly want to do today? Does waking up count? I live, I breathe, which are actually two things I truly wanted to do today.

What plans did you have as a teenager that didn’t happen? Are you happy it didn’t work out that way? Growing up in North Hollywood California, I wanted to be a famous actor. But I hated auditioning for school plays so I later majored in Theater Arts as a director. But, of course, I got sidetracked by life and never really regretted it.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I took Lynn on a mini vacation for her birthday.Well, while trying to check into the Zion Mountain Ranch, we found out that my debit card was declined. I do not use credit cards and had very little cash. So Lynn had to pay with her credit card for my birthday present to her. Our room and meals. Monday morning we spent the day in a Chase bank, where we found out I was a victim of Identity theft. Imagine if I had been traveling alone and found out I had no cash, no card, and no way of getting home? That certainly woke me up.

Thanks, Cee, for another group of fun questions!

Please check out Cee’s Share Your World for more answers to these earth shattering questions.

My complaint with dawn photos is that the sun rises so darn early. And I don’t! But in Utah, sunrise occurs at a more respectable time. And we were on vacation in a very picturesque area, so all I had to do was roll out of bed, get some clothes on, and walk down the road a bit. When I took this shot, I had no idea M’s theme this week was “Road”.

Another hour and the fog was gone.

At The Girl That Dreams Awake there are about 20 to 25 more road shots from around the world.

What Stays In Vegas

What Stays In Vegas

Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge (COB) is all about those great photos that you take which really don’t seem to fit into a common category.  We’ve all taken them and like them, because we just can’t hit delete and get rid of them.

There is never a theme to this challenge, so what is an odd ball is all up for you to discover and photograph.

If you wanted to de-clutter where you live, what room / space would you start with?  (And why, if you’re feel like admitting to it.) There are several rooms/ spaces I would like to de-clutter. You can’t find anything in our pantry because Lynn has all kinds of seeds in 5 gallon buckets for sprouting (anyone lost at this point can ask for clarification). Also, our two car garage can only fit one car because of all the stuff we are storing for family, including empty boxes. Who would store empty boxes?

If you want to remember something important, how do you do it (sticky note on the fridge, string around your finger, etc.), and does it work? I usually tell Lynn to remind me. Does it work? Let’s put it this way; Lynn’s memory is only slightly worse than mine.

If you could create a one room retreat just for yourself, what would be the most important sense to emphasize:  sight (bright natural light, dim light, etc.), hearing (silence, music, fountain, etc.), smell (candles, incense, etc), touch (wood, stone, soft fabrics, etc.), or taste (herbal tea, fresh fruit, etc.)? When we moved in March, I was able to create my retreat and I love it- though it’s nothing like what I had imagined. What I wanted was a den with dark walls, preferably wood. I got beige paint. I also wanted a leather couch but, since we are both vegetarians, I opted for a naugahyde chair. No animals were harmed in the making of this chair, though two fully grown naugas gave up their hydes gratefully as it was quite warm for March. And since my photos are all around the house, I have old, vintage ads and artwork on the walls. This is where I do most of my Lightroom work and listen to classical music.

If you could interview one of your great-great-great grandparents, who would it be (if you know their name) and what would you ask? My mother’s parents and grandparents all died before I was even born. There is no one left of her family, but I just recently learned that her side were all Russian Jews. I would love to find out more. And then I could have a Jewish name. Or Russian. Myron Ginsberg. Or Alexey Dostoyevski. How great would that be?

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? Last week was rather quiet. We saw the film Snowden. This coming week is Lynn’s birthday so I am surprising her with a mini vacation. Details to follow afterwards- and photos, too, I hope.

Now, get yourself on over to Cee’s Share Your World to share your world!

(And, as always, the photo above has nothing to do with this post except that this post is mine. And so is the photo!

The theme this week is Round! With an exclamation point! This must be important!

So we’re vacationing in Canyonlands and Arches National Parks in Utah surrounded by some of the most gorgeous natural rock formations in the world. Sculpted by wind and rain and whatever else Mother Nature has in her arsenal. And I take photos of old gas station signs?

Well, yeah!

See, anybody can take beautiful photos when they’re surrounded by the beauty all around. Like in Canyonland and Arches. In fact, most everybody has. Just take a look at 500px.

I rest my case.

Now, go check out The Girl That Dreams Awake for more Round! objects.

Emilio Pasquale does not exist. He is a figment of an overactive imagination, a young man trapped in an old man’s body! A product of the sixties, he survived the Summer Of Love in San Francisco and the business world of New York City before divorce and ill parents led him to Las Vegas, where he now resides and contemplates retirement.

He is happily remarried to Melinda, commonly called Lynn (or babe, or dear, or milady- which she prefers). They have a large extended family with 10 children- all thankfully grown, though two still reside with them. Educated in the arts, he has only recently returned to his first love- photography. He shoots mostly landscapes in and around the southwest United States with occasional forays to parts further east and west.

He will continue his posting under the name and persona of Emilio Pasquale, though he is fully aware that some may feel duped or lied to. But everything he has said and done in his postings has been truthful, though names and/or relationships may have been changed or juxtaposed, e.g. references to brothers or sisters were usually one or more of their children.

He is open to all questions, queries, and comments- angry, bitter, or otherwise.

You may have questions, he might have answers.
