August at Calico Basin

August at Calico Basin

Excerpt from The New York Times Evening Briefing for Wednesday August 17, 2016: “A wildfire near San Bernardino, Calif. ‘hit hard, it hit fast, it hit with an intensity that we haven’t seen before,’ the county fire chief said.

High winds, high temperatures and low humidity in the state’s fifth year of drought drove the flames to flare from five acres to 30,000 in less than 24 hours. Officials ordered the evacuation of about 82,000 residents in an estimated 34,500 homes.”

The closest the fire came to Las Vegas was about 340 miles away and yet, smoke from the blaze blanketed our skies. Imagine what it must have been like for those who were evacuated.

This is the second month in a row that the mountains in Calico Basin were obliterated by smoke But this time, the air cleared by nightfall, even though there was little wind. The air has remained clear since Wednesday, even though the fires are still active.

They are calling August “Wildfire Season” so I imagine it is appropriate for Cardinal Guzman’s Changing Seasons challenge.

What’s this “Changing Seasons” blogging challenge?

«The Changing Seasons 2016» is a blogging challenge with two versions: the original (V1) which is purely photographic and the new version (V2) where you can allow yourself to be more artistic and post a painting, a recipe, a digital manipulation, or simply just one photo that you think represents the month. Anyone with a blog can join this challenge and it’ll run throughout 2016. It doesn’t matter if you couldn’t join the first month(s), late-comers are welcomed. These are the rules, but they’re not written in stone – you can always improvise, mix & match to suit your own liking:

These are the rules for Version 1 (The Changing Seasons V1):

  • Tag your posts with #MonthlyPhotoChallenge and #TheChangingSeasons
  • Each month, post 5-20 photos in a gallery.
  • Don’t use photos from your archive. Only new shots.

These are the rules for Version 2 (The Changing Seasons V2):

  • Tag your posts with #MonthlyPhotoChallenge and #TheChangingSeasons
  • Each month, post one photo (recipe, painting, drawing, whatever) that represents your interpretation of the month.
  • Don’t use archive stuff. Only new material!

  1. We lived in California when we were just newlyweds. I remember the wildfires and the fear.

There is Lousiana, they are flooded and there are the wildfires and all the rain others got would solve the problem.

    Great picture

  2. I love the pastel look Emilio. It is quite beautiful. It’s also smokey up here too. 😦 I can hardly see the top of our mountain here in town! So scary all these fires. I pray they are contained soon.

  3. We have, during the past couple of weeks, finally gotten some rain so I have stopped watching the woods for signs of smoke. There seem to be only two weather modes this year: drought and flood and that’s everywhere. I can’t imagine pictures that better represent your weather. They are stunning, wonderful. The desert at it’s most deserted.

  4. Such vivid and lovely images. Of course, I am sure the smoke and fire is NOT lovely for those around it of course. I hope they get it under control, though I am sure that is a complex and huge undertaking.
