The smoke from a dangerous fire over 200 miles south creates a fiery red sunset in Las Vegas NV.

  1. Oh my goodness Emilio it looks surreal. Hopefully the fire is controlled soon. We have had a terrible fire season in Western Canada. Recently over 400 fires burning.

    1. Believe it or not, I have been trying to get an update on this fire but it is difficult. The latest I could find is that it was supposed to burn into July (it began June 23, my photo was taken June 24) in Big Bear CA, about a 3 and a half hour drive from here. Our sunsets have been clear for at least the past week so I believe it is out.

  2. We were dealing with thick smoke that about blotted out the sun completely in 2011. It does create great photos.

    1. It does. But at what a cost? Over 17,000 acres and the livelihood of many in the tourism industry at Big Bear Lake imperiled. As of my current research, no deaths and no structures were burned- but what of wildlife?

      1. Wildlife generally seem to know how to get out of the way of fires, and habitats get burned, but nature recovers remarkably well from fires. But not necessarily people and businesses, on the other hand.

In New Mexico, we lost a lot in Los Alamos including a lot of historic houses in fires set by the Forest Service that got out of control around 2002 or 2003. In 2010, more fires in the Jemez, just south of Los Alamos, damaged Dixon Apple Farm and then floods from runoff on the scorched earth destroyed the rest of Dixon Apple Farm a few months later. They couldn’t rebuild and closed down (lots of politics with state land involved). They were world famous for the Champagne Apples they had bread and grown on their farm for over 70 years.

      1. My pleasure, Emilio.

  3. Emilio, this is quite the stunning shot!
I was just talking about my fire fighting days earlier this evening. Back then, I just thought of it as exciting work. Now I think about the destruction and even death

    1. I’ll say. There’s another fire that started today right along the I-15 freeway a little over 300 miles away. When the smoke got too bad, people supposedly got out of their cars and ran. Last I heard there were about 40 cars and people burned. The I-15 is the main road between Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

  4. Gorgeous shot Emilio. We have some shots from Nevada a few years ago when smokes from several fires in four states were commingling in the skies there. It makes for stunning photos but the consequences, as you have suggested, are vast.
