So, Robyn at Captivate Me has this challenge. The first Sunday of each month starts it anew. You take one of your own photos and, each week, process it differently so that on the fourth week you end up with four different versions. Take a look at all the submissions and join in! Sometimes it’s fun, sometime’s it’s not. Just like life!

The above image was shot at Lake Las Vegas, a luxurious  destination that only lasted about 5 years until the banking debacle and subsequent real estate crash. Now the place is pretty much deserted. The casino and most shops have closed down. This hotel has somehow remained open but is under new ownership.

Taken just at sunset, there was no direct sunlight and I had to fake a few highlights on the building and in the water. The sky was pretty clear at this angle but the clouds you see were taken from another angle that same night and dropped into the sky. I then had to add a red/orange cast to the buildings and water to match the sky. Because it was shot at ISO 6400 there is a lot of noise and I had to adjust Luminance Smoothing in Lightroom to +75.  My transformation:

Please feel free to click on the image above for a larger, more detailed, version. But I guarantee the noise will be very obvious!

  1. Ha ha love that – “sometimes it’s fun. sometimes it’s not”. It really does depend on our image and mood for sure 😀
I love what you’ve done this first week for July…and your chosen image. Really like the Autumnal tones. Beautiful.
Yes, I see the noise, but actually I don’t mind it at all. Go with it for an old film look.
Nice work Emilio – you’ve inspired me!!

    1. I’ve inspired Robyn. You heard her! I will never feel this giddy again. I’VE INSPIRED ROBYN. And it’s not even one of my favorite shots! What am I going to do next week? Now I’m truly at a loss. Well, there’s always retirement.

  2. “…sometimes it’s fun and sometimes it’s not. Just like life!” …That, that right there is why your blog is one of my very favorites!! Lovely post — of course I love the 2nd- beautiful, warm tones make me want to step right into your photograph, talk a walk around some abandoned shops …maybe even try to break in one and then stop by the Bellagio Promenade for some shopping and lunch. ❤

    1. Actually, I was going to write “…sometimes it’s fun and sometimes it’s not. Just like being married!” But then I thought better of it! But thanks for saying I’m one of your favorite blogs. It is really special when someone who’s work you admire says something like that. Oh, and the abandoned shops are miles and miles away from the Bellagio so it might be a long walk.

  3. So much better than the original…but of course, what else would we expect from our Emilio!? Love this one. Can’t even imagine that you’ll better it, but I’m sure you will somehow…..

    1. I should have saved this for last. I’ve been looking and have no idea what to do next. But remember that bus a few weeks ago when people were telling me to think outside the box? Guess I’ll have to try that again. But it hurts! 🙂

        1. Ah, Emilio….was just thinking about this pic and relooked at it……am thinking lights…you need to get some lights in those windows, etc. Yes, this could be a new direction….

  4. I find this interesting. I haven’t participated because I have only one processing goal: to make the picture look as close to natural as possible … or to make it look some other particular way. I don’t think I have four versions of any of my pictures, at least not that I would like. But it’s really interesting watching what others do.

    1. I have recently started leaning towards de-saturating my images but this one just seemed to call for the over saturated look. These challenges just help me to explore my technique and, occasionally, new effects in Lightroom or Perfect Effects. Thanks, Marilyn.

  5. I like the warm tones you brought out in the image with this edit! Adding the other sky you took that night really changed the whole atmosphere of the picture. Great job and looking forward to what else you have planned for the rest of the month!

  6. Wow – love the drama! Sure sets the scene for some action, perhaps the opening scene of a new sci-fi film. This is going to be hard to beat!
BTW, do you have a Lightroom program or is it a monthly subscription? I’m thinking of getting it.

    1. Sci-fi? I was thinking more of a romantic comedy. But maybe we could merge the two and write it ourselves! I had Lightroom 5 but when they offered Lightroom 6, I switched over to the subscription. And for me it’s the worse thing I did. I can not get get the program on two computers like they say you can and I’m having problems transferring all my earlier work onto this version of Lightroom.

  7. I can’t see any corrections I can make anywhere on wordpress. I’m sorry. But thanks for your comment about week one. I see a painting in my future, too. As soon as I saw that sky I thought of FotoSketcher, which transforms photos into artwork. So maybe next week?

      1. Oh no worries. I was off running around with friends at the beach this week so didn’t even notice. Maybe because I did not look at a computer for 4 days! Sun, fun, sand and friends…no computer needed:)

  8. Way to come out of the gate full tilt! I love it. The colors are beautiful, such a dramatic effect compared with the original image. Always a pleasure to view your images and edits, you find the story! Have fun this month, I am looking forward to seeing what direction you go next.

    1. Carrie, I don’t know how I missed so many comments from this week. I apologize. I know I read this earlier . And I am sure I replied. But then I probably didn’t hit “Post Comment”. This month has been fun, except for this 4th week which I’m just preparing now for later today. Hope you drop by to see it! 🙂

        1. I have a relative who says he would rather come to Las Vegas to see the world. But it’s a rather tainted view. I mean if the world is really like Las Vegas, then I can’t wait for Virgin Galactic to get off the ground!

    1. Thank you. When it doesn’t crash, Perfect Effects is great at adding skies. Even behind tree branches and leaves most of the time. I was adding skies to all my shots but then an online friend, Ben Rowe, suggested that sometimes it can distract from the message or story. So I’ve been backing off a bit.
